About Au Pair
An au pair is someone who provides childcare and light household duties while experiencing cultural exchange. There are two types of au pair arrangements:
- Live-In Au Pair: Lives with the host family, with accommodation and meals provided as part of the arrangement.
- Live-Out Au Pair: Lives independently and commutes to the host family's home for work.
Benefits of Becoming an Au Pair
For Live-In Au Pairs:
- Free accommodation and meals.
- Immersion in the family’s culture and lifestyle.
- Stronger bond with the host family.
For Live-Out Au Pairs:
- Independence and personal space outside of working hours.
- Flexibility to maintain a separate social life.
- Suitable for those already living near the host family’s location.
Who Can Become an Au Pair?
Anyone who meets these basic requirements can apply:
- Age: Typically between 18 and 50 years old.
- Language Skills: Basic proficiency in the language of the host country is often helpful.
- Childcare Experience: Previous babysitting, nannying, or caregiving experience is an advantage.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Personality: Friendly, responsible, patient, and eager to learn about new cultures.
- Driver’s License: Not required! Many families are happy to host au pairs who do not drive, as long as they can manage childcare responsibilities.
